Rapport au corps des adultes en situation d’obésité (RECORPS)

Taking into account the relationship with the body of people in a situation of obesity in their care (RECORPS)

Project overview Today, the relationship to the body is not systematically investigated in clinical practice in subjects with obesity. The objective of this project was first to carry out an inventory of the various disorders of the relationship to the body, to explain them, and to specify in what way they can be relevant to consider in the clinical practice of obesity medicine. Three dimensions of body dysperception, including numerous possible disorders, were highlighted: lack of awareness of the reality of one's body size, difficulties in identifying hunger and satiety signals, and a feeling of insecurity with regard to certain bodily sensations, thus generating emotional eating and/or difficulty in practicing physical activity.
This first work allowed us to propose that these disorders be evaluated and taken into account in the care of people with obesity. To do this, the limitations of the tools used to identify body-related disorders should be reduced. Indeed, these tools do not evaluate certain dimensions of the relationship to the body, and they are difficult to use in clinical practice. Moreover, the multiplicity of therapeutic responses (psycho-corporal, psychiatric, educational, etc.) aiming at improving the relationship to the body would imply a multidisciplinary approach which would be facilitated by the use of a common, multidimensional scale of the relationship to the body.
In a third phase of the project, a DELPHI (consensus conference of experts and patients) was conducted in order to develop the constructs of a future self-questionnaire aimed at evaluating the relationship to the body of adults in an obese situation in clinical practice. The experts had to agree on the dimensions and items to be included in the future tool. These dimensions and items came from validated questionnaires in English or French, pre-selected following a systematic literature review (subject of a master's thesis). A psychometric study will be carried out to validate the questionnaire.
RECORPS addresses a plural, self-dependent and complex phenomenon. The disorders of the relationship with the body - at the same time of the order of exteroceptive, interoceptive and proprioceptive sensitivities - require to be taken into account by the professionals of the multidisciplinary team in the clinical practice of the medicine of obesity as they can prove to be factors of success or failure of the accompaniment. This consideration of the lived body and the perceived body would support the process of reappropriation by the person of his or her body and its management.

I carry out my research in the field of Public Health in order to evaluate - beyond the effect of physical activity - its feasibility, obstacles and facilitators in the field of health.

Activités récentes : Active lifestyle is a complex health behavior, determined by many factors at micro, meso and macro environmental levels. Our current research aims to increase our knowledge of these factors and to explain them within ecological models. Thanks to the experience gained at the Health & Wellness Lab of the University of Calgary (Alberta, Canada) during a CRCT from 2022 to 2023, and based on the results of previous studies, we will be able to implement projects in France based on implementation science, with large samples of patients. We will then be able to document variables that are unfortunately still under-evaluated in multimodal programs promoting physical activity in secondary and tertiary prevention, such as acceptability, adoption, feasibility, fidelity, safety, reach, sustainability, integration into the care pathway, and cost.
