Développer l’estimation de la Littératie en Santé (Health Literacy)

Our main research focus is on social inequalities in oral health, modalities of oral health care utilization, and analysis of care pathways/care channels.

Project overview Implementation of a tool to measure oral health literacy applied to oral health - Oral Health Litteracy (OHL) and analysis of factors associated with OHL (contextual factors).
The estimation of oral health and its determinants in children in the suburbs of Dakar by studying more specifically the OHL of mothers. For this purpose, an OHL questionnaire was adapted and the analysis of factors associated with OHL, as well as its influence on the dental health of children, was conducted. The first results show that the OHL of mothers is significantly associated with the caries prevalence and oral hygiene behaviors of children.

PROJECT SHEET 2: DEVELOPING INTERVENTIONAL RESEARCH
2 axes: 1/Improve access to preventive oral services for pregnant women and act on the care pathway: multi-professional research group.
To develop a reference system of knowledge and skills for the mother and child by seeking a consensus of experts using the Delphi method and by conducting a qualitative study with mothers on their educational needs in oral health.
2/ Evaluating the relevance of a TVE program for families
Caries in very young children poses a problem of management due to the complexity of the treatments to be implemented (care under general anaesthesia, lack of availability of surgery, few trained practitioners) and the frequent recurrence of caries after treatment due to the absence of educational action to bring about a change in eating behaviour. The consequences are particularly harmful to the child's quality of life and oral functions (phonation problems, aesthetic problems, loss of self-esteem). Moreover, access to treatment remains unequal. The implementation of a therapeutic education program for the families of these children seems relevant to support the treatment and avoid recurrence of caries. A public health thesis that we supervised at the LEPS is interested in this question. The purpose of this thesis was to analyze the determinants of early caries disease in children, to propose a conceptual model of intervention to prevent recurrence and the development of new lesions, and to implement a therapeutic education program which will then be evaluated. This thesis will be followed by a post-doctorate devoted to the implementation of the intervention and its evaluation.

Collaboration 1- Participation in a national francophone research network on health literacy (REFLIS) of which LEPS is a member (call for projects IRESP-Prévention 2016). We worked on the validation in French of health literacy measurement tools.

? Study on the demand for care and the supply of dental care: co-supervision of a doctoral thesis in health economics with Pr J. Wittwer.
Important out-of-pocket expenses for dental prosthesis treatments exist in France and their amounts can constitute financial obstacles in the access to care with a renunciation of dental care. The purpose of this study is to identify the role of adjustment mechanisms of dental care supply and demand in the variability of care consumption and differences in need.
? Study on the economic impact of oral health on chronic diseases
Several studies have shown the association between dental diseases and chronic diseases such as diabetes. We analyzed the use of dental care by chronically ill patients and their consumption of dental care. We responded to the 2016 IFRO (French Institute for Research in Odontology) call for tenders dedicated to the impact of chronic diseases on dental health, more precisely the health expenditure aspect, and we won the research grant. This project was implemented by a doctoral student in health economics at the University of Paris-Dauphine under my responsibility and with the collaboration of the research laboratory in health economics at the University of Paris-Dauphine (LEDA-LEGOS).
