ORION research program: Urinary incontinence of institutionalized elderly people - social representations and action logics

Project overview Urinary incontinence is a major public health problem in France and in the world. Affecting almost 9% of the population, it is one of the main causes of institutionalization of the elderly. The management of the EHPAD residents concerned and the logic of action implemented within these establishments are multiple and do not always seem to be adapted. The literature shows that a better understanding of the social representations of urinary incontinence could help improve its management. The ORION research program was therefore set up. The 3 studies that make up the program aim to understand and apprehend the social representations of EHPAD residents, their caregivers, but also the general population, on urinary incontinence:
- ORION 1, is a webometric study, which focuses on the existing representations on the web and social networks
- ORION 2, is a mixed-methods study, which interviews residents, caregivers and the general population through semi-structured interviews, focus groups and questionnaires
- ORION 3, is a mapping study, looking at different innovations and approaches to urinary incontinence around the world.
This research program has several perspectives. For elderly people affected by urinary incontinence, this research will help them understand their feelings, but also develop their empowerment. For the caregivers and nurses, this program will initially support their skills and understand their knowledge and attitudes regarding this phenomenon. It will also allow them to adapt their professional behavior according to the results of this research. Thus, their expertise will be valued and the quality of care will be improved. Finally, the results of this research will allow the development of innovations to prepare the future on this complex subject.
