Impact of the health crisis and the economic situation in Lebanon on the eating habits of Lebanese nurses

Project overview Nurses face multiple stressors that can influence their health by changing their health behaviors. This study aimed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis in Lebanon on the dietary habits of hospital nurses. This was a cross-sectional study, data were collected using an online questionnaire, disseminated in three languages; Arabic, English and French, to assess the dietary habits of nurses before and during the health and economic crises in Lebanon. Thus, the socio-economic factors and The level of stress coping was assessed using the questionnaire "Brief Cope The sample was selected by the non-random accidental sampling method and recruitment was done by the snowball method. SPSS 21 and Excel 2016 were used for all statistical analyses.
Of the 500 nurses who responded to the questionnaire, variation in weight status was present in 66% of nurses. Consumption of different food groups decreased during these crises, including meat (42.8%), fruit (30.8%), vegetables (21%), and milk and dairy products (30.4%). There was a significant correlation between stress and deterioration in the consumption of healthy foods, particularly meat (p<0.000), fruits (p=0.032) and vegetables (p=0.041). Similarly, it is shown that the decrease in monthly income has a real impact on the consumption of meat (p<000), fruits (p=0.001) and milk and dairy products (p=0.031).
The results showed that the pandemic and especially the economic crisis changed the consumption of healthy food by hospital nurses in Lebanon, which may have a significant impact on their health.
