"For several decades now, hospitals have been at the heart of Western healthcare systems. For several years now, its organization has been turned upside down by the emergence of two concepts: quality and the involvement of patients and families. The emergence of these two concepts in hospitals raises questions of operation and performance that are less consensual than they might seem. The presentation will focus on a triple qualitative case study of patient committees in French-speaking Belgian general care hospitals. The results suggest that the deployment of such systems can be considered from two angles: from improving hospital quality to fulfilling the immune function of hospital organization, and from hospital performance to organizational robustness."
